Clearing Files off of iPhone 4S and MacBook Air

Clearing Files off of iPhone 4S and MacBook Air

So, first of all, I hooked my iPhone up to my MacBook. It launches iPhoto. I tell it to import the new photos only into folder "iPhone 2014". Then asks to delete from the iPhone, so I delete from iPHone.

Now, I want to see how much free space I have on the iPhone.

Settings - General - Usage
2.8 gig in messages.
2.4 gig in Photos and Camera

2.3 gig is in the camera roll.

So, now I want to delete these photos, but I'm not clear if I'll lose any photos or not.

OK. Photos - Albums says I have the following:
Camera Roll - 628 photos
My Photo Stream - 93
Videos - 26

So, I want to see if I have these on my Macbook Air:

Under Iphoto - Events, I see a few Events that look relevant:
iPhone 2014 - But this Event has photos and videos in it. Hmmm. They're named something like IMG_9999. Videos and Photos follow the same name format. Hmmmm.

I seem to recall now that I think I have more than one iPhoto Library.

iPhone 420 photos/videos dated 9/24/13 - 12/29/13.
43 videos and 377 photos.
iPhone 2014 There are 73 photos/videos in the Event 'iPhone 2014'.
20 videos and 53 photos. 6/24/14 - 7/10/14.
iPhone 2014a 52 photos. 0 videos. 4/8/14 - 5/13/14.

Then, I unhooked the phone and hooked it back up again. It says all 628 photos have been imported already. They're dated from 9/24/13 - 7/10/14. But, it doesn't show what Event they were imported into. Nice.

[...continued in extended entry]

OK. I ended up with the following Events:
iPhone 2013
iPhone 2014a
iPhone 2014b
iPhone 2014c
iPhone 2014d

So, now, I unhook the phone, hook it back up...
'All photos have already been imported'.
I click on 'Remove photos from Rob's iPhone'.

Remove 628 photos from your iPhone. This cannot be undone.

I click Delete Photos.
It says Removing Photos.

My iPhone now says "No Photos or Videos".

Settings - General - Usage

Photos & Camera = 273 MB.

It shows I have 273 MB in PhotoStream.

Now, Settings - Photos & Camera

Turn off My Photo Stream and My Photo Sharing.
Says Turning off Photo Stream will delete all photos from your iPhone Photo Stream.

Says "Turning off Shared Photo Streams will delete all shared photos from your iphone".
Hit "Delete Photos".
Turning off Shared Photo Streams.

Now, Settings - General - Usage.
Photostream is now down to 134 MB.

Storage
7.1GB available 6.2 GB used

Now, I see that my Apple ID is wrong for iMessage.

Settings - Messages - Send & Receive - Apple ID. Change from robkiser12@gmail.com to rob.kiser@gmail.com

So, that was painful, but I put my correct Apple ID and email address in for iMessages. (rob.kiser@gmail.com).

But, I still show that I have 2.8 GB in messages.

WTF? How to delete them?

OK. So apparently, you can't delete all messages. Nice. But, you can delete message threads from a contact group, apparently.

So, the quickest way to delete them is to click edit in upper left corner, and click minus sign on left, then delete button on right. It's the faster way. Otherwise, you can swipe from right to left on each one, and then hit delete. This works also.

But now, it doesn't show that my storage used by messages has changed.
Settings - General - Usage. Messages still says 2.3 GB.

So, I'll reboot it.

Messages still says 2.3 GB.

All of that work and they're still there. Fuck me.

Yeah. I can't delete a single fucking iMessage. Nice.

Now, I deleted a few and did a regular shut down. (Top button). Now, restarting. Fingers crossed. Still there. Nothing will delete them.

Will try updating to ios 7.1.2.

OK. That fixed it so that I can delete messages now. It updates the amount of free space left. Now it says Messages takes 1.8 GB. OK. Better.

It's still not deleting them right. Mother fucker.

Messages now at 1.5 gig.

I'm not really clear why, when I connect the iPhone to the MacBook Air...I'm not clear why it launches iPhoto instead of iTunes. Apparenly, iTunes will delete the messages that are marked for deletion.

So, in any event, I finally got it to delete all of the old messages. I didn't really do anything different. I'd delete a few at a time, close out of messages, and then go back in. Finally, they were all gone.

Then, I went into the iphone and deleted my iCloud backups, because I really don't have anything on the phone that I want to save except for my contacts, really.

Macbook Air

Now, I'm going to try to free up some space on my MacBook air.

First, I go to Launchpad - then Disk Utility. It says I have 500GB hard drive, used 376 GB, and have 123 GB free. Hmmmm.

What I want to do now is export all of my pictures from the two Photo Libraries that I have set up on the Mac.

http://www.peeniewallie.com/2013/07/migrating-iphot.html

To get the Size and Free Space of the Mac's Hard Disk on Mountain Lion:
Here's how you show your disk's free space on OSX 10.8, step-by-step:

Go to the Apple menu.
Click the Apple icon at the top-left of the screen.
Click About This Mac at the top of the menu.
The About This Mac window will appear.
Click the More Info... button.
A new About This Mac window will appear with a picture of your Mac.
Click the word Storage towards the top left of the window.
A window showing your free disk space will appear. The display includes how much disk space is used for each of your music, movies, photos, apps, and backup files.

123 GB free out of 500 GB. Movies = 86 GB. Photos = 247 GB.

So, I've got to move my photos off.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/19516321

For some reason, if I try to copy over the network (wired or wireless), it drops occasionally. So, instead, I try exporting it straight to the 32 Gig CF card. This works. But, it's hard to know how much space is available. So, this works, but it is slow, and I'll have to move the data in 32 GB blocks.

So, it seems like it would be better to use the Seagate drive.

First, I need to install the special driver for windows. The directions say to go here:
Support.seagate.com/crossplatform

Support.seagate.com/crossplatform

Windows Driver to Allow Seagate "For Mac" Drives to Work on Windows (HFS4Win.exe)
Instructions
• Step 1
Connect the Seagate external "for Mac" drive to the Windows computer. The drive must be connected to the computer during installation or the install will not complete.
• Step 2
Download the file HFS4WIN.exe to your Windows computer.
• Step 3
Double-click on the HFS4WIN.exe file to start the installation.
• Step 4
Follow the installation Wizard to complete the install.
• Step 5
Reboot the computer.
• Step 6
The Seagate "for Mac" drive displays in (My) Computer and Windows/File Explorer as a drive letter (for example, E:).

OK. So, I did a test of two Events with the same name in iPhoto.
Select the 2 events.
Click on File - Export.
Set Kind: JPEG
JPEG Quality: Maximum
Include: Title and keywords
Location Information
Size: Full Size
File Name: Use Filename
Subfolder Format: Event Name

It renamed the 2nd folder with a "2" after it.

Then I tested importing them into the XP pc upstairs (101) that I installed the drivers on. Works fine. I can see the photos. All is good.

Now, I'll export every Event at once from the one iPhoto Library that I have open. Should be faster than using Wifi, or using the CF cards.

It says I will copy 13,350 files.
Click Export.

Kicked it off at 4:58 a.m.

Wake up at 10:00 a.m. and it's done.
Now, hook it up to the XP box upstairs (101). Start copying the files over. I get this error: ERROR copying File or Folder. Cannot copy IMG_4422. Cannot find the specified path. Make sure you specify the correct path.

Now, I hook the Seagate into the rear of the XP box. When it's plugged in, a light comes on the drive. I copy instead of move the files. 10:14 am.

Seems to be working.

I do a count on the files copied over. It says I copied 13,182. Hmmm.
So, the s:\iphoto folder has 13,182 .jpg files.

So, the f:\iphoto has 13,162 .jpg files.
And the s:\iphoto has 13,182 .jpg files. So, somehow I increased by 20 files? Not sure how this happened.

S:\iphoto> Dir *.jpg /s > dir.txt

Now, I see that the date/time stamps are all wrong on the files. Nice.

F:\iPhoto>dir *.* /b /s > f_iphoto.txt

F:\iPhoto>s:

S:\>cd iPhoto

S:\iPhoto>dir *.* /b /s > s_iphoto.txt

S:\iPhoto>

This won't include the date/time stamps.

OK. Now, finally, I see the difference. It's in the SF Homeless Guy folder. There are files on the S drive that aren't on the Seagate drive because initially, I was moving them across. So, it moved across 20 homeless guy pics, then crashed. So then, when I compared the two folder structures, the S drive had 20 extra homeless sf guy pics

So now, I guess the plan is to wipe the drive.

So, I wiped the drive. But then I started thinking...why do I have to lose the date on the file? Turns out, there is a way to fix it, at least on the File - Export from the iPhoto part. If we change it as follows:

File - Export
Kind: Original (not JPEG)
This greys out JPEG Quality, Include Title and key words, Location Information, Size = Full Size.

File Name: Use File Name
Prefix for Sequential blank
Subfolder Format: Event Name

This preserves the correct date on the Date Modified and Date Created in Finder, at least on the Apple side of things.

However, when I copy the pics over from the SeaGate drive to the PC, it changed the date from the original date to today's date. So, this sucks, but I'm not sure how to get around this.

The correct date is in the EXIF data, in theory, so I could probably rename it and or correct the dates on the Windows side with some type of app.

Now, I copied over the Flagged photos (722).

So, in any event...my theory is that I've copied over every photo in this iPhoto Library to my S drive. Now, I deleted the files on the SeaGate drive.

Now, I open up the other libraries, but I don't see any pics in them. Now, I see that they're in the trash. So, I want to restore them from the trash. The way to do this is:
Click on Trash can on the left.
Select all of the pics you want to restore.
Select Photos - Put Back.

This actually works. It recreates the Events, the Flagged ones, etc.

I have 3 libraries. The first one I exported is 3. Now, I'm in 1, I think.

It has 15 folders (events), and 4.192 photos using 18.8 GB.

Now, I'll File - Export. Select Max JPEG quality, Title and Keywords, Location Information, Full Size. Now...set Kind = Original. This greys out many fields. Now, Subfolder Format = Event Name. Export.
4,192 items.
New Folder - iPhoto 1 - Create. OK.

I export all of the events. Then, I make another pass for the Flagged folder.
For this one, set Subfolder Format = None. Create a folder named flag. Select it for the export.

Now, I'm doing Library 1. So, in order, I did 3, 2, 1.
File Export Original Maximum Full Size Use Filename. Subfolder format Event Name.
Export.
This will do 18,278 files.
Seagate Backup - iPhoto 1
OK.

OK. When I'm copying the files from the SeaGate to the PC, I have to copy as opposed to move or it crashes after a few files. Not clear why this is.

F:\iphoto1>dir *.* /b /s > c:\temp\f_iphoto1.txt

F:\iphoto1>s:

S:\>cd iphoto

S:\iPhoto>cd _Library1
The system cannot find the path specified.

S:\iPhoto>cd _Library_1

S:\iPhoto\_Library_1>dir *.* /b /s > c:\temp\s_iphoto1.txt

S:\iPhoto\_Library_1>

So, the only difference is on the "_02_SF" folder.

2140 files.

1985 files on the S drive.

OK. Now, I'm trying to see if I can't get the dates on the files right. I can keep the date created and date modified accurate when I export the photos from iPhoto by changing the File Export Kind to Original.

File - Export
Kind: Original (not JPEG)
This greys out JPEG Quality, Include Title and key words, Location Information, Size = Full Size.

File Name: Use File Name
Prefix for Sequential blank
Subfolder Format: Event Name

This preserves the correct date on the Date Modified and Date Created in Finder, at least on the Apple side of things.

The date modified and date created values are correct on this folder on my S: drive. So, I did manage to preserve these date stamps. Hmmmm.

Now, I'll try to copy to the s drive directly from the MacBook air, connected to the LAN via the Ethernet cable. I'll copy over the Flagged folder with 722 files again, but to a different location.

So, this works. It preserves the dates. When I copy the pictures over onto the external drive, and then connect that drive to a PC, it loses the date stamps, for whatever reason. So, instead, I save them to the S drive over the Ethernet, and this works.

So, I'll start copying my files over again.

I'll copy this Library 3 over as s:\iphoto\library3

This actually works. The problem I had was trying to use that stupid disk drive in between as part of my file copy process. I just need to copy straight from the iPhoto File Export - to the S: drive using Finder.

It says Library 3 will copy 13,290 files (I already copied over two folders...SF Homeless Man and Scanner 1/3/14. )

Started at 5:30 a.m.
1000 at 5:48 am
2000 at 5:58
3000 at 6:12
10:03 a.m.

OK. I copied over all three libraries. Now that I'm looking at the dates on the files, the only library that had the dates reset on it was the Library 3. My original Library 1 and Library 2 were fine. So, why were the dates different on Library 3? I think because I did it first, and because I did the exports as JPEG instead of Original. That's my best guess.

The only issue that I see is that I can't figure out how to sort the "flagged" folders to the top. The $ folder will sort to the top, so I'll name the folder $_flagged.

_Library_1 18,363
Library_1 18,361

S:\iPhoto\_Library_1>dir *.* /b /s > c:\temp\_library_1.txt

S:\iPhoto\Library_1>dir *.* /b /s > c:\temp\library_1.txt

OK. I'm try to do my comparison, but I can't make heads or tails out of it.

_Library_1 = 18,362
Library_1 = 18,362

Both of these folders have the correct time stamps on the files, but not the folders. Good enough.

Good enough. Moving on.
======================

_Library_2 = 4,3498 (there was a thumbs.db file...deleted it)
Library_2 = 4,348

Both of these folders have the correct time stamps on the files, but not the folders. Good enough.

Good enough. Moving on.
======================

_Library_3 = 14,129 files (there was a .ds_store file....deleted it)
Library_3 = 14,129 files

_Library_3 has the wrong dates on most of the photos, except for those in the flagged folder. So, from this, I decide we'll blow away _Library_1, _Library_2, and _Library_3. We'll keep Library_1, Library_2, and Library_3.

Good enough. Moving on.
======================

OK. For some reason, the _Library_3 folder won't go away. In DOS or windows. Hmmmm.

OK. It's gone now. Nice.

So, now I can delete all of the photos off my my MacBook Air.

So, whichever Library I'm in...I think it's 1...I select all of the Events, and select Photos - Move to Trash. Now, I have to empty the iPhoto Trash Bin.

iPhoto - Empty iPhoto Trash.

Are you sure you want to permanently delete 18,278 items permanently?
OK.
Emptying iPhoto Trash.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/21934809

NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurrences of that photo in the library.

So, as best as I can tell, at this point, I don't think it made any difference whether I used the external Seagate drive to copy the files to the network S drive, or whether I copied them there over the network (Ethernet). It seems to be the same result. I think that what made the files end up with the correct date time stamps was exporting them from iPhoto as "Original" instead of as "JPEG".

iPhoto - Empty iPhoto Trash. Are you sure you want to permanently delete 4,192 items permanently? OK. Emptying iPhoto Trash.

Now deleting 4,192 from Library 2. I think that this is the number of photos plus the number flagged, so 4,348 = 4,192 + 140 = 4,332. Close.

iPhoto - Empty iPhoto Trash. Are you sure you want to permanently delete 13,368 items permanently? OK. Emptying iPhoto Trash.

Now, deleting 13,368 from Library 3. So 14,129 = 13,368 + 722 = 14,090. Close.

Now, I want to see (finally) how much space I've freed up on this silly MacBook. Argh. Took me like a week to figure all of that out. Lord.

Previously, it said:
• 123 GB free out of 500 GB.
• Movies = 86 GB.
• Photos = 247 GB.

Now, it says:
• 162 GB free out of 500 GB.
• Movies = 65 Gig.
• Photos = 37 GB.
• Other = 225 GB.
So, what is the "Other"? How to get rid of that?

Kappy Aug 29, 2011 6:02 PM in response to Khaddy Open Disk Utility and see what is reported for used and available space. That "other" category is just what cannot be filed under the existing categories and is most likely just free space. What matters is what DU reports.

First, I go to Launchpad - Other - Disk Utility. It says I have 500GB hard drive, used 338 GB, and have 160 GB free. WTF????

iPhoto delete Libraries
Throw away the item named iPhoto Library in the Pictures item of the Finder's sidebar, or launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new library.
Now, in Finder, see the iPhoto Library, iPhoto Library_2, and iPhoto Library_3, but they take up 2 GB, 226 MB, and 651 MB, respectively so...I don't think that's the issue. I'll try rebooting.
So, I'm not sure why it does this. The space should move from "Other" to "Free", I would think.
Click on Disk Utility. I clicked on Verify Disk.
It seems to be fine. Not sure what the issue is.

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11229
Command - Shift - 4 to take a screen shot of part of the screen. Saves it on the desktop.

OSX updates available.
I want to make the "Other" go to "Free" on the About This Mac graph.
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/apple-in-the-enterprise/how-to-find-and-delete-pesky-other-data-in-os-x-and-ios/

How to find and delete pesky 'other' data in OS X and iOS

http://www.omnigroup.com/more

Installed OmniDiskSweeper in my Applications folder. Selected Macintosh HD and clicked Sweep "Macintosh HD" Drive.

It says I have 190 GB in the .trash folder.

So, I went into the .Trash folder and basically deleted everything in there. Spinning colored wheel. Let's see what we get.

OK. So, the computer crashed in a big way. Like...it said I needed to force-quit several applications. I rebooted. When it came back up, though, it looks remarkably better.

Now, it says the following:

• 354 GB free out of 500 GB.
• Movies = 65 Gig.
• Photos = 37 GB.
• Other = 33 GB.

Worlds better.

Now, I deleted some more...
Now, it says the following:

• 400 GB free out of 500 GB.
• Movies = 56 Gig.
• Photos = 4 GB.
• Other = 31 GB.

Good enough.

I'm getting a message in Software Updates about Mavericks 10.9.4 Update.

So, I decided to go ahead and upgrade the O/S on the MacBook air to Mavericks 10.9.4 . Why not, right? Only now, it's saying that it wants me to sign in with my old AppleID @wispertel.net, which I'm not using any more. So, I want to change it, but I don't want to lose everything on my MacBook Air. God I fucking hate apple.

So, I copy off the rest of my notes and save them on Simon as S:\My Documents\Notes_iPhone_4S.doc

Now, I want to change my Apple ID on my MacBook air. I've copied off all of the notes and all of the photos. So....

Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Password
Click on "Change" button.

Click on "-" to remove old Apple ID rob@wispertel.net
You can either click on "+" or "Create Apple ID" to put in your new apple id (new_email@gmail.com).

However, this does precious little. Now, we've got to deal with the fucking iCloud.

iCloud password. Please enter your password for old@wispertel.net.

So, I obviously need to change my Apple Id in my iCloud configuration, somehow.

System Preferences - iCloud - Account Details

Apple ID: old@wispertel.net
apple_sucks_cocks@icloud.com
Description: iCloud

Clicking on "Manage Apple ID" launches some idiot website http://www.appleid.apple.com

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5408213

How do I change the Apple ID stored on my MacBook Air? I have changed my Apple ID on the Apple ID website, but both my MacBook Air and my iMac show the old Apple ID when accessing iCloud.

"Unfortunately this did not help with the problem. When I access the iCloud through the iMac's System Preferences iCloud icon, the Apple ID that is displayed in the iCloud account access window is still my old Apple ID. When I do the Open System Preferences>Users&Groups>Password the correct Apple ID is being displayed. The problem is that I can't view my iCloud account because the iCloud icon is not using the current Apple ID and it won't give me access."

So, this guy is having the same problem that I'm having. Nice.

"I had the same issue. Finally I decided to go to System Preferences/iCloud/Sign Out and then sign in again. This means that you are erasing all icloud content on your computer (well, it is an option that you are presented with. I thought a good choice to prevent the possibility of doubles). When I signed in again with my new user name, it all came back. Interesting thing is that I checked my other computer after doing this and it has the old Account ID. So although the old account is in the iCoud Preferences, everything was still in sync. So I went through the same process on my other computre and now they are both in sync with each other and with iCloud."

So, let's try that.

So, I clicked Sign Out. It warned me for each item that I'm going to be royally fucked and that Steve Jobs is spinning in his grave right about now.

"System Preferences is trying to turn off Find My Mac. Type your password to allow this."

Put in passwrod. Click "Turn Off".
Signing Out.

"Your iCloud accoutn couldn't be removed at this time. Turn off all iCloud services and try again."

So, I unchecked one of them in the list...contacts? Now, it finally let me sign out of the fucking iCloud.

Now it says "Sign in with your Apple ID".
I put in my new Apple ID and password. Signed in.
"Use iCloud for mail, contacts, calendars, notes, and safari. (checked)."
"Use Find My Mac".
Allow Find My Mac to use the location of this Mac?
Allow.
Requiring a password to unlock your screen is recommended when using iCloud keychain.
Not now.
Enter your Apple ID password to set up iCloud Keychain.
Enter Password. Click OK.
Enter your iCloud Security Code.
Put in 4 digit number.
Next.
Re-enter 4-digit number.
Enter a phone number that can receive SMS messages.
Put in phone number. Click Done.

It worked. Lord fucking God. And, I didn't lose anything either. My notes are still there.

Connected to the internet via ethernet.
Attempted to connect wirelessly, prompted for passsword to the Wifi network, put in password to wifi network, now I'm surfing wirelessly.

Now, I can connect, wired and wirelessly.

At the end of the day, I checked the amount of free space on the mac.

405 GB free out of 500 GB.
Movies = 56 GB.
Other = 30 GB.

Hallelujah.

I also cleaned up all of the files off my my SeaGate 1TB drive. In Finder, it shows 995 GB available at the bottom of the Finder window.

I also wiped all the photos off my 32 GB CF cards.

So, in terms of storage space I'm taking with me, it looks like this:
MacBook Air = 405 GB
Seagate drive = 995 GB
5 x 32GB CF cards = 160 GB
1 x 8 GB CF cards = 8 GB
1 x SanDisk Micro SD card 128 GB = 128 GB

Total = 1.7 Terabytes of storage
