The Unsung Hobo

This slideshow is composed of original images I shot over one weekend in October(2006). Most of these images were shot while I was riding in an open boxcar from TN to AL. There is also an aerial image of Nashville, and a few shots from Signal Mountain near Chattanooga, TN. All photos were captured using a Canon EOS 20D and a Canon EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens.

This slideshow (3:47) is a 10 Meg self-playing executable named hobo.swf created using Imagematics StillMotion PE. Soundtrack is Soul Meets Body by Death Cab For Cutie, off of the Plans album.

Click here to download a Microsoft Windows executable version of the presentation that allows you to pause and go backward and forward. Click here if you need help.

Lyrics in the extended entry.

Also, this story is a chapter in the book Killing Strangers.

Lyrics for Soul Meets Body by Death Cab For Cutie:

"Soul Meets Body"

I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel, feel what its like to be new

Cause in my head there's a greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations
So they may have a chance of finding a place
where they're far more suited than here

I cannot guess what we'll discover
We turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels
But I know our filthy hands can wash one another's
And not one speck will remain

I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
If the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I hold you near
Cause you're the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body

I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
If the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I hold you near
Cause you're the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

Many thanks. I'm still pretty seriously bruised. Right elbow is one large bruise. Right knee is healing, but slowly. :)

So did y'all get your sorry ass arrested?..............Just kidding. As usual, a stunning portrait of time and place. It was truly evocative.

I have to say that these are beautiful pictures. I wish I could get a few of them to keep as desktop images. If you would care to send them to me let me know, I will check back to see your comment. I used to live in Tullahoma, TN and not far from the tracks. I had a bit of a hard time sleeping the first week after moving near them. After the initial shock of the train going by that first week I slept like a baby waiting for the train whistle to blow. I sure do miss that ole city. I plan to move back one day. Again, beautiful pictures. It caused me to remember when in Tullahoma.

Ivan and Chick Voice,
Many thanks for the kind words. Tullahoma is a beautiful town. I love being here. I too, was kept away by the trains, but got used to them. It was odd. The first night, I was in h3ll. Trains woke me all night long. After that, though, I swear I hardly noticed them. Crazy. Ivan - tell me what photos you want and I'll set you up.
