Colossal Cave Adventure
Colossal Cave Adventure is the original text-based "adventure" game written to run on a computer. A text-based game written the 1970's in ForTran by Willie Crowther and subsequently expanded by Don Woods. I first played this game sometime in high schoool, while visiting the University of Southern Mississippi, in 1982-1984. It was a lot of fun, but I never did get around to solving it. Later, I played a modified version of the game at Ole Miss, probably in 1984-1985. The Colossal Cave Adventure web site has some different versions of the game you can download, and hints for solving the game.

I have created some detailed directions for installing a DOS version of the the original Colossal Cave Adventure in the extended entry.
Note: These directions explain how to install Kevin Black's DOS version of his and Bob Supnik's DECUS version of the original game, as written by Willie Crowther and expanded by Don Woods. There are other versions of the game on the Colossal Cave Adventure download page.
1. Create a new folder named c:\adv (in either DOS or Windows - doesn't matter.)
2. Download this file(adv350kb.zip) and save it in the folder. (c:\adv\adv350kb.zip).
3. Extract all of the files from the adv350kb.zip archive using WinZip into the same c:\adv folder.
4. Go to DOS. (Start - Run - command or Start - Run - cmd).
5. Once in DOS, navigate to the c:\adv folder in DOS and verify the files extracted successfully with the following commands:
c:
cd \adv
dir
6. You should see the following:
C:\> c:
C:\> cd \adv
C:\ADV> dir
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is E06B-B9ECDirectory of C:\ADV
01/03/2006 10:03 PM [DIR] .

7. To read information about how to play, enter the following DOS command:
C:\ADV> more read.me
8. To play the game, just type adv and hit ENTER:
C:\ADV> adv
This should get the program running. If you want to know more about Colossal Cave, need help, tips, etc., try going to the Colossal Cave website, as they have forums, different (subsequent) versions of the game, tips, tricks, etc.
