Colorado cracks down on "road sodas"

Although not many people were aware of it, up until last Sunday, in the state of Colorado, it was legal for the passenger of a motor vehicle to have an open container of alcohol. Someone mentioned this to me earlier this year, and I looked it up, and lo-and-behold, it was accurate. Now, however, all that has changed. We became the last state in the union to enact an open container law on Sunday July 3rd, just in time for our great nation's birthday.

The crime is considered a traffic infraction punishable by a $50 fine and three points on the driver’s license, officials said. Before the enactment of the law, passengers could drink and possess alcohol, but the driver couldn’t. Colorado is the last state in the nation to have an open-container law.

Update: My etymological introduction to the term "road soda" was a direct result of my membership in Northern California Chapter of the Carol Kopko Fan Club. All hail the wise and benevolent Carol Kopko.

But it's only an open container of alcohol if you leave it in a container that clearly identifies it as alcohol. Hence, the term "road sodas". All you have to do is take a few swigs from your can of Coke before adding the rum and VOILA...instant road soda cleverly disguised as a can of innocent Coke. Fast food paper cups work great too....as do thermal coffee cups. My personal favorite are the Jack in the Box cups that say "Ice Cold Beverage" on the side in big red letters. Now who doesn't like to partake in a nice ice cold beverage every once in a while occifer, I mean officer. : )
