Slide Show Files → mp4 files

I have been in the process of updating my old slide show videos from .swf files - which are no longer supported by any modern operating system nor web browser - to .mp4 files which can (and eventually will) be embedded and shared on sites such as YouTube. *

* Because of YouTube's daily upload limits, it is going to take several weeks to upload all of these videos to YouTube. Once that is done, links will be posted here.

Here are links to the actual mp4 video files. To save them to your computer, right-click on the link and select "Download ..." or "Save As ..." or whatever it is that your web browser says.

Postcards From Nowhere: Aspen, Vail, Mt. Evans

Above: A shot I took rolling down the highway going north on US Highway 285 somewhere between Buena Vista and Fairplay. Slightly blurred effect by opening the shutter slightly longer than normal.

The photos were all shot in July of 2014 using a Canon EOS 50D with one of the following lenses:

EF-S 17-85mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom
EF 600mm f/4 IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom

The soundtrack for the slideshow is Hurricane by MS MR. I chose this song because I heard it at some point and Shazammed it.

The images are compiled into an 5 Meg (3:40) Adobe Flash slideshow (2014_july.swf) that will not work on an iPhone. However, everyone else on the planet should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you're on a PC and want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (2014_july.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

Postcards from Nowhere: June in the Rockies

Above: Jennifer feeds a neighbor's horse that she says resembles "Spirit - The Stallion of the Cimarron". She claims that, when visiting friends, she was known to carry both the DVD and the VHS version, as not everyone had DVD players..

I've been working in Colorado Springs lately. After work, weather permitting, I drive around in the mountains west of the Springs. Shooting locations include Phantom Canyon, Shelf Road, Bishop's Castle, Westcliffe, Hartsel, etc. The photos were all shot in May/June of 2014 using a Canon EOS 50D with one of the following lenses:

EF-S 17-85mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom

The soundtrack for the slideshow is City of Black and White by Mat Kearney . I chose this song because I heard it in Jose Muldoon's the other night and I thought it was pretty cool, so Shazam'ed it. Twice. It actually came out 6 years ago, but I don't remember it, for whatever reason.

The images are compiled into an 7 Meg (3:50) Adobe Flash slideshow (2014_city.swf) that will not work on an iPhone. However, everyone else on the planet should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you're on a PC and want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (2014_city.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Postcards from Nowhere: Colorado Springs

Above: View of the Front Range at sunset as seen from Perry Park Road between Sedalia and Larkspur.

I've been working in Colorado Springs lately. After work, weather permitting, I drive around in the mountain west of the Springs. Shooting locations include Victor, Cripple Creek, 11 Mile Reservoir, Spinney Reservoir, Hartsel, Ute Pass, Wilkerson Pass, Colorado Springs Zoo, Evergreen Lake, Golden, etc. The photos were all shot in April/May of 2014 using a Canon EOS 50D with one of the following lenses:

EF-S 17-85mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom

The soundtrack for the slideshow is Demons by Imagine Dragons. I chose this song because I hear it on the radio sometimes .and I Shazam'ed it.

The images are compiled into an 7 Meg (3:04) Adobe Flash slideshow (2014_demons.swf) that will not work on an iPhone. However, everyone else on the planet should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. Postcards from Nowhere: The Front Range

Above: Sunrise in Turkey Creek Canyon.

Jennifer and I have been hanging around the front range so far this year. I haven't been to the airport since January, which suits me just fine. These pics are from a motorcycle ride I did with some buddies up the front range, roughly from Boulder to Estes Park to Big Thompson Canyon. Also, some photos from Colorado Springs and the cog railway up to Pike's Peak. These photos were shot on Canon EOS 50D's with one of the following lenses:

EF-S 17-85mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom

The soundtrack for the slideshow is Safe and Sound by Capital Cities. I chose this song because I hear it on the radio sometimes .and I Shazam'ed it.

The images are compiled into an 7 Meg (3:42) Adobe Flash slideshow (2014_safe.swf) that will not work on an iPhone. However, everyone else on the planet should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. Christmas 2013

Above: Lighting Chinese Lanterns on New Year's Eve

Jennifer and I were together in Madison, MS for a while over Christmas break. Then, she flew to New Mexico, and I hung around for a bit before flying back to Colorado. These photos were all captured over Christmas break of 2013/2014 in or around Madison, Mississippi. The photos were shot on a Canon EOS 50D with one of the following lenses:

EF-S 17-85mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom

The soundtrack for the slideshow is Dirty Paws by Of Monsters and Men. I chose this song because I heard it somewhere and Shazam'ed it and it sorta got stuck in my head.

The images are compiled into an 8 Meg (4:24) Adobe Flash slideshow (2013_Christmas.swf) that will not work on an iPhone. However, everyone else on the planet should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. Postcards from Nowhere: MS,AR,MO,TN,KS,CO

Above: Jennifer sold her 1986 Honda TRX-70 to Allie and then made sure she was all checked-out to drive it.

Jennifer and I were together in Madison, MS for a few weeks in June and July of this year. Then, she flew back to CO, and I drove the bike home through the Mississippi Delta, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and finally back to Colorado.

These photos were all captured over a two month period from July - Aug of 2013. These photos were captured in TN, MS, AR, MO, KS, and Colorado. The photos were all shot on a Canon EOS 50D with one of the following lenses:

The soundtrack for the slideshow is Don't Go by Fascinoma. I chose this song because I heard it on the show American Dad (Season 4 Episode 4) and I fell in love with it. The lyrics just make the song that much better. Also, of course, it reminds me of Buttercup and how she stole my running shoes, but refuses to admit it.

The images are compiled into a 9 Meg (5:00) Adobe Flash slideshow (2013_Dont_Go.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (2013_Dont_Go.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Above: A self portrait of me driving down the PanAmerican Highway through Panama, immediately after crossing the border from Costa Rica.

The woman I loved more than any woman I ever met has left me, so I decided that I need to go on the biggest road trip ever to try to clear my head. Over the last month or so, I drove my KTM 990 Adventure from Moline, Illinois to Panama City, Panama.

The bike I drove is a 2010 KTM 990 Adventure that I bought new off the showroom floor in Moline, Illinois. I purchased the bike as a Christmas present to myself six months ago, and just told them to hold it for me until I could come and pick it up.

Jen was wrapping up her freshman year, I wrapped up my project in San Francisco. Carrie decided that she was done with me and started going out with a new guy. So, all of the sudden, I went from commuting between SF, Denver, and Jackson, to pretty much having nothing to do with my time except to focus on how bored and lonely I was.

Instead of sitting around and stewing in my misery, I decided to hit the road on a motorcycle adventure I've always planned on taking, but never really found the time or the impetus to actually initiate.

These photos were all captured over a one month period in May-June of 2013 where I drove the bike from Moline, Illinois, to Panama City, Panama, a journey of over 5,600 miles. The photos were all shot on a Canon EOS 50D with one of the following lenses:

This trip is broken into two different slideshows.

The first slideshow covers the trip through Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

The first slideshow starts out with Stay by Rihanna, one of the many songs that Carrie used to sing to me in the car, followed by Today Has Been Okay by Emiliana Torrini. I heard this song on Grey's Anatomy in Nicaragua (I think) and liked it. The third song is A-Team by Ed Sheeran, another favorite of Carrie's because we convinced her that the lyrics included the following: "A bee stung my neck and made me scream..I peed in a jar of cold cream...", etc.

The images in the first slideshow are compiled into a 90 Meg (9:20) Adobe Flash slideshow (Panama1.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (Panama1.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

The second slideshow covers the trip from Costa Rica to Panama.

The soundtrack for the second slideshow is Home by Philip Phillips.

The images are compiled into a 32 Meg (3:28) Adobe Flash slideshow (Panama2.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (Panama2.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

Postcards from Nowhere: The Loneliest Highway in the World

The woman I loved more than any woman I ever met has left me, so I decided that I need to go on the biggest road trip ever to try to clear my head. This week, I drove my dirt bike across the "loneliest highway in the world", (US 50 from San Francisco to Denver). The photographs are from CA, NV, UT, and CO.

The bike I drove is a 2004 XR650L I bought in Petaluma, California in 2011. I've driven it from SF > Alaska > SF > Denver > SF > Denver. It now has over 30,000 miles on the bike. So, I'm going to basically retire it at this point. Heading out to get the KTM in Iowa tomorrow and get out of the country to clear my head down in Central America.

This slideshow starts out with a song I heard in the Iron Door Saloon, the oldest continuously operated hotel in California. I nearly strangled the bartender when the song ended before Shazam had figured out who it was. The song is "Canela" by Devendra Banhart. Then, when I get deep into the Great American Desert, the song changes to a song by The Fray called Be Still, which Carrie sent to me while I was on the trip.

The images are compiled into a 20 Meg (4:30) Adobe Flash slideshow (SF_Denver.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (SF_Denver.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

Postcards From Nowhere - San Francisco - Jan 2013

Carrie came out last weekend and we tore through SF like lunatics, shooting with more gear than any two sensible people have any business carting around. We're generally shooting with 3 Canon EOS 50D frames and the following lenses:

The photographs are from North Beach, Coit Tower, Chinatown, Pillar Point at Half Moon Bay, and 4 Mile Beach just north of Santa Cruz.

This slideshow features a song by Miike Snow called Cult Logic.

Sutro Sam - The First River Otter in SF in a Century

Last week, a river otter made the local news here when he appeared, whimsically, at the ruins of the Sutro Bathhouses on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, inside the city limits of the city and county of San Francisco.

Although I've seen a good number of sea otters along the Monterey Bay, I can't say as I've ever seen a river otter in the wild. It's sad to think that we nearly wiped out the river otters in North America for waterproof coats, but that's what happened. The beavers were converted into hats, the river otters into coats, and the whales into lamp oil.

I'm not certain when he first appeared at the bath houses - some say as far back as September of 2012. But the secret was blown when he made the front page of the SF Chronicle last week. Then ABC news picked up the story. I believe Mark and Laura said they heard about it in New Zealand. So, the secret was out as of last week. The first river otter in a century had somehow made the Sutro Baths his home.

This, in and of itself is kinda odd because, these places are ruins. As in...dangerous. The Sutro Baths burned in 1965, and since then, they've sort of been neglected, if you can imagine. Think of carbon steel rods jutting from concrete berms, tourists balanced precariously between mossy green ponds on narrow concrete beams, skipping over broken boards, etc.

No one knows for sure where Sutro Sam came from. The best guess is that he came from a colony of otters in Marin County headlands at Point Reyes, and then swam south across the Golden Gate.

However he got there, he found the ruins of the Sutro baths, a half century after they burned, and someone had been pumping goldfish in there, for whatever reason. My assumption is that he'd never tasted a goldfish, but he seems to have taken quite a shine to them.

Sam shares the ruined Sutro baths with a surprising diversity of wildlife, including, but not limited to, Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias), Buffleheads (Bucephala albeola) , American Coots (Fulica americana), California Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis), various gulls, and many other birds I've not yet identified.

These shots were taken on Jan 4th-5th in the city and county of San Francisco, California at the ruins of the Sutro Bath House.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens, or on a Canon EOS 50D frame with a Canon EF 600mm f/4.0 IS USM lens, with or without a Canon 1.4x teleconverter on a Gitzo carbon fibre tripod with a Gitzo GT5541LS carbon fiber tripod and the Wimberley II (WH-200) head with the Wimberley P-40 Arca-style quick-release plate.

By coincidence, I was there for a full-on photography-tour meetup of about 30-40 local photographers, I'm happy to report that I had the biggest setup there, and don't think it wasn't noticed. Several people were there, shooting, on assignment. None of them had the gear that I had. Was very difficult for them to learn that their photography companies couldn't afford to field the gear that I carried around just for idle amusement. But such is life.

This slideshow features a song by Miike Snow called Cult Logic.

The images are compiled into an 8 Meg (3:42) Adobe Flash slideshow (sutro_sam.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). Postcards From Nowhere: Monticello - Colorado

These are some shots from when Carrie came out to Colorado in September, and also two trips where I was in Monticello, MS in September and October of 2012.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens, or on a Canon EOS 50D frame with a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens.

Although I shot most of these images, Carrie shot a few good ones, including the photo above, an antique enameled oven, and the old-school coffee pot. I've attempted to call out her photos in the extended entry. Also, Alyssa and Mary took the photos the two of us at Cooper's Ferry.

This slideshow features a song by Gorillaz called Stop The Dams.

The images are compiled into an 8 Meg (3:42) Adobe Flash slideshow (Carrie2.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). Postcards From Nowhere: Monticello

I begged off a couple of weeks from work and spent a week in MS and a week in CO just sort of hanging out. These are some shots from when I was in Monticello, MS the week of August 6th, 2012.

Although I shot most of these images, Carrie shot a few good ones, including the cattle egret photos, and a very nice shot of Red Bluff. Basically, she ignored my advice and got a better photo than I did. It happens. Also, I think that Alyssa took the photos the two of us.

This slideshow features a song by One Republic called Good Life.

The images are compiled into an 8 Meg (4:00) Adobe Flash slideshow (1208MS.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). Postcards from Nowhere: NXNW

I'm trying to get caught up with the photos I've shot this year. I've shot roughly 30,000 pics so far, so I'm shooting about average. But I've been on the road so much that I've not really made time to clean them up or organize them or do anything meaningful with them, really.

So, in any event, I decided to throw together some of my shots from the bike ride. In this journey, I drove a 2004 Honda XR650L from Morrison, Colorado to San Francisco, California. Now, normally, this would be a thousand mile down-hill run. A cake walk. But I decided to go through RMNP, Tetons, Yellowstone, Craters of the Moon Idaho, Crater Lake, Oregon, etc. So, I took a fairly circuitous route that roughly doubled the length of the trip.

I started the journey on the evening of Friday June 1st. And I rolled into San Francisco on Monday night, June 11th. But I split the trip into two parts. On Tuesday June 5th, I parked the bike in short-term parking at IFRA and flew from Idaho Falls to San Francisco, returning the night of Friday June 8th to resume the journey.

A couple of shots were captured with an iPhone 4S.

This slideshow features a song by the Guillemots called Sea Out.

I chose this song because it was on some silly-soap-opera-daytime-housewife-drama called Gossip Girl that the girls were watching in MS. I liked the song a lot. The piano and the singer's voice are fairly good. So I've been listening to it a lot since I got back into the city and...well you get the point.

The images are compiled into an 18 Meg (5:41) Adobe Flash slideshow (NXNW.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (NXNW.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Postcards from Nowhere: San Francisco

Really had a blast this weekend with Carrie out here. I'm not clear how many people knew she was coming out. I don't even think she knew for sure if she was coming out until she actually landed. Friday was cloudy and cold, but Saturday and Sunday were nice enough for us to run up to Napa and Muir Beach. Ended up being an insanely fun weekend that I could write a whole book about if only I had the time.

A couple of shots were captured with an iPhone 4S.

This slideshow features a song by Adele called Turning Tables.

I chose this song because I was giving Carrie grief for bringing a bunch of old-school CD's along. Then, we ended up listening to them, of course, as the radio sucked so bad. One of her CD's was an Adele compilation, which had this track on it.

We were just sort of driving along the Pacific Coast Highway and then, suddenly I realized that the song had turned into a duet. Adele had accompaniment. There just aren't words for how beautiful Carrie's voice is. You just can't know.

Postcards from Nowhere: Pismo Beach

My directionally-challenged friend Doug is currently on a loop though the American Southwest on a BMW GS1200R. He blackmailed me into riding along with him for the stretch from Pismo to San Francisco. I begged a few days off, tried to meet him down there, but broke down in the middle of nowhere, somewhere between Big Sur and San Simeon.

In some shots, I also used a circular polarizing filter. For some of the flower shots, I also used a small carbon fiber tripod.

This slideshow features a song by Gotye called Somebody that I used to know.

The images are compiled into a 8 Meg (4:01) Adobe Flash slideshow (pismo2012.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). I'm doing some work in San Francisco, and on my lunch breaks, if it's nice, I go out and wander around the city shooting whatever catches my eye.

Postcards from December

I'm sort of skipping across the earth like a stone again, in a manner that makes most people dizzy, I think. I cobbled together a few images from over the last month or so. Most of these images were captured on a phone camera. Some on my iPhone. Some on the phone-cameras of others. A few shots from one of the Canon cameras.

This slideshow features a song by a local Denver techno duo called 'Breathe Carolina'. The band was named after a dream the founder had where a girl named Carolina was dying and he was yelling for her to breathe. The song is called Blackout.

The images are compiled into a 9 Meg (3:03) Adobe Flash slideshow (11_december.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above.

Postcards from Nowhere: Mississippi

Jen and I managed meet up for a few days around Thanksgiving in Madison, MS. She flew in from NYC, Kansas City, New Orleans and drove to Madison. I flew in from Denver to Houston to Jackson. Was very good to see the cousins again, of course. We picked cotton, shot the rifles, rode horses, played football, badminton, and of course gorged ourselves on Thanksgiving Day.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens, or on a Canon EOS 20D frame with a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens.

Postcards from the Soccer Fields

The fall soccer season has come to a blustery end. Many thanks to the coach and assistant coaches for working with the girls for yet another season.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens, or on a Canon EOS 20D with a Canon EF 600mm f/4.0 L IS USM. The 600mm lens was a little big for shooting the game, it seems. I had to walk across the street to get any shots, as I was too close. Even then it only worked if I shot them on the far end of the field. .

This slideshow features a song by Fleetwood Mac called "Landslide" off of the album "Fleetwood Mac".

Postcards from November

The fall is pretty much over at this point, I'm afraid. Winter's setting in fast and tight and now's the time I wish I had a plan, but never I do. Never I do. This slideshow is composed of some of the shots I took over the last few weeks on the rare occasion where I stumbled out of bed, from the end of October into early November.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens - either the EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM or the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM.

This slideshow features a song by Bon Iver called "Skinny Love" off of the album For Emma, Forever Ago.

Amazon Customer Review:

Note: I was working in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in the summer/fall of 2010. For some reason, I always think that this song was recorded one winter in a cabin up in Door County (the Thumb). In fact, it was recorded in Dunn County in 2006.

"It is often mentioned that this album was written over the course of 4 wintry months in a Wisconsin cabin. Stereotyping the quiet solitude of this album on its origins is unfair, however: this isn't just one of those singer/songwriter efforts you hear about some guy writing on his own out in the woods; it is the epitome of a singer/songwriter recording the heartfelt musings of life in isolation. "

Postcards from the Fall: Wish You Were Here

I've been riding the XR around the Colorado Rockies for a few days, trying to snap a few shots of the fall before the snows of winter set in. Mostly, I've been riding around Clear Creek and Gilpin Counties. This fall has been exceptional in that the leaves have changed color very slowly, allowing the aspens to turn nearly as red as Maple trees. The prettiest fall I've experienced since I moved to Colorado about 15 years ago.

This is a slideshow of some of the shots I took over the last few weeks on my solo journeys through the Rockies.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens - either the EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM or the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM.

This slideshow features a song by Coldplay called Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.

Postcards from Nowhere: Yosemite, The Central Valley, and The Great American Desert

I recently drove the XR from San Francisco to Denver. The initial plan was just to drive the bike from San Francisco to Yosemite and check out the park, as I'd never been there. But once I got into Yosemite, I figured, "ah...what the h3ll. It's only a thousand miles of desert between me and home. I'm doing it!"

So, after driving across California's Central Valley into Yosemite park, I went up over Tioga Pass, down to the "Whoa Nellie Deli"/Mobil station at Lee Vining and Mono Lake, then across the Great American Desert back to Colorado. I drove across the desert on two-lane black-topped roads, namely California State Highway 120, US 6 and US 50, widely acclaimed as the Loneliest Road in America.

This is a slideshow of some of the 5,000 shots I took on the one week solo journey.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens - either the EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM or the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. I ultimately chose not to take my big lens, as it weighs too much and would have required a trailer to pull it, I think.

This slideshow features a song that I couldn't get out of my head when I was driving across the Great Basin desert of Nevada for whatever reason. Initially, I thought the song was by Coldplay, but it turns out it's Never Say Never by a local band, The Fray.

The images are compiled into a 15 Meg (4:08 Adobe Flash slideshow (yosemite.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (yosemite.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Update: Here's the recovered version of the slideshow.

Postcards from Nowhere: San Francisco to Alaska and Back

"I've gotta tie up my loose ends 'fore my skin turns to mange...I've gotta look at the sky and imagine I've found my place" - Deer Tick - Mange

This is a slideshow of some of the 10,000 shots I took on a two week journey from San Francisco to Alaska and back on a dirt bike.

This slideshow features a song that I heard one night sitting at the bar in Gearhart, Oregon. I was at the little resort there...Gearhart-by-the-sea, drinking and taking notes on the day's arduous journey and I heard this song in the background that made me want to hang myself. I asked her to turn it up and what the song was. She turned it up and said the song was "Mange" by "Deer Tick". Jennifer doesn't like the song, but I think it's awesome.

The images are compiled into a 17 Meg (5:36 Adobe Flash slideshow (alaska.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (alaska.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Postcards From Nowhere: Madison

This is a slideshow of some shots Jennifer and I took over the last week in Madison.

The images were all captured on one of these frames [Canon 40D or 50D] and one of these lenses [Canon image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) or (EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM)].

This slideshow features a song that Sarah was learning to play on her acoustic guitar. The soundtrack is 'Kids' by MGMT.

Postcards From Nowhere: Fog City

The photo above is the last photo that miserable Canon EOS 40D ever took. The camera had a nasty habit of freezing up when it should have been shooting 8 frames-per-second. This male house finch turned to the right, gave me a perfect shot with a nice profile with red-head-on-green-background with the smoothest bokeh you've ever seen. It was a beautiful shot. Or it would have been. But when he turned, the 40D froze up and he flew away. I decided I'd had enough. In about a tenth of a second I removed the lens and the cf card, stepped out of the parked truck, and smashed the camera onto the asphalt twice, as hard as I could. So, the good news is, that 40D will never screw up any more of my shots. The bad news is, I'm down a frame.

This issue aside, my run of bad luck with cameras has not abated. My with ET-83C hood fell off while I was driving down Larkin Street in SF and a truck ran over it. Canon refused to repair my 7D under warranty. Just got this back today and it cost me a grand to get it back in action. Canon has not been able to successfully repair the 40D after several tries and yesterday, that camera pissed me off for the last time.

This slideshow features a song is a song I heard last night on an Asics commercial. The song really pulled me in so I decided to try to cobble together a slideshow. Ostensibly, it's my SF photos from May, but it also contains photos from Colorado from the first week of June. Some of the photos are of geese and goslings. Some photos show Jennifer and Katarina dressed as hoboes in the canoe with their paddles raised. These were separate incidents. The girls fed the ducks and geese lots of bread. They were just screwing around with the paddles, posing, at the other end of the lake.

The soundtrack is 'Ten Thousand Lines' by Electric President.

Parental Warning: There is one swear-word (g0d@m1t) in the soundtrack at 2:55.

The images are compiled into a 10 Meg (5:38 Adobe Flash slideshow (lines.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (lines.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Postcards from Nowhere: San Francisco Graffiti

Here are some of my photos of murals, graffiti, and wheat paste art I've discovered in the city since my arrival in February.

Postcards From Nowhere: Hawaii

Jennifer and I recently returned from Spring Break in the Sandwich Islands, where we split our time between Oahu and the Big Island. The islands are beautiful, of course, and we drove all over them taking photos of birds and flowers. We swam in the ocean every day. Went boogey-boarding and swam with the sea turtles. Jennifer even managed to ride a dolphin.

The images were all captured on one of these frames [Canon EOS 7D, 40D, 50D] and a [Canon L-series image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM) with ET-83C hood] or a [Canon image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM)].

The images are compiled into a 9 Meg (3:22 Adobe Flash slideshow(hawaii.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is 'Raise Your Glass' by Pink. I chose this song because Jennifer and I heard it while we were driving around in the Jeep with the top down on Oahu.

Postcards From Nowhere: San Francisco

I had the girls out in San Francisco for the long President's day weekend. Really ran them ragged, of course. Here's some photos from our little trip.

The images are compiled into a 6 Meg (3:52 Adobe Flash slideshow(sf_girls.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). Postcards From Nowhere: Morrison, CO

It's really stunning how much my images are improving with this Canon EF 600mm f/4.0L IS USM Supertelephoto lens. I'm shooting the same birds that I always have, only now, when I'm looking at the images, I can see that these animals are in a desperate brutal fight for survival. They all look so nice and pretty with the 400mm lens. But man, you point that 600mm at them and suddenly I'm like...wow...I had no idea. No clue.

Also, today I ran into a cool fellow named Rodgers Naylor down in Morrison painting on the side of the road. Now, this is not unusual to see in the Carmel valley in CA or in the Star Valley in Idaho. Or even on the mountain passes around Breckenridge and Aspen. But I don't see it much around here, so I stopped to talk to this would-be-artist and he was quite nice of course, and a brilliant painter.

We talked at some length about the color of the sky. What color the eye sees and what color the brain remembers and what people are willing to accept as believable when they see it on canvas.

Brilliant conversation, of course. And the weather is just stunning. The snow is melting and motorcycles are out. It was probably in the 60's today, if I'm not mistaken. Not a bad day, all things considered.

I've really been juggling the frames around on the lenses this week. Trying to figure out what frame I like on each lens. It's not as simple as you might think. I get the new Canon EOS 7D tomorrow, but I'm not sure if that will make things better or worse. There is such a thing as the Paradox of Choice, after all.

The images were all captured on one of the following frames:

and one of the following lenses:

The images are compiled into a 7 Meg (2:00 Adobe Flash slideshow(painter.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is 'Everyday' by Carly Comando. I chose this song because I heard it on a television show back in November and it was driving me insane trying to remember it.

I don't normally go for all of the cheesy Ken Burns Effect pans and scans. But I did throw a few zooms in on this slideshow just to try to convey how radically the 600mm lens has improved the detail I'm pulling out of these birds.

Always, of course, the help of Whatbird.com is greatly appreciated.

Postcards From Nowhere: West Virginia, Ohio, PA

This week, I took off Thursday morning for West Virginia where I found a old steel mill and snapped a few photos. Eventually, I found my way back to work, but it was good to get out for the morning and squeeze off a few shots in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

The images were all captured on one of the following:

Christmas 2010

In 2010, I shot just under 51,000 images. Last year I shot just under 58,000 images. So, I'm a little short for the year, but I blame this on the fact that I've been working pretty hard this year and I wasn't able to take as much vacation as I would have liked.

Be that as it may, here's a slideshow of some of the photos I shot over Christmas break this year.

Santa Fe

<

Wendy and I ended up without the kids for few days, so we decided to take the scenic route down to Santa Fe and kick around New Mexico a bit.

I've been to Santa Fe before, but she used to spend a lot of time down there, so it was cool to have her to sort of show me around. And, as always, we took her ipod which is loaded with hits from the '70's. This is possibly one of the best parts of the road trips, as she plays lots of songs that I've not heard in 30 years. Or, if I have heard them, I don't know who sings them. And she'll quiz me all the time on "who sings this", which of course, I seldom know. Ambrosia? Atlanta Rhythm Section? 10cc? Who knew?

Here's a brief slideshow of some photos I shot this month (April 2010). Some of them were around Denver. About half of them were from the trip down to Santa Fe.

The images were all captured on one of the following:

Moab 2010

^Click on the photo above to play the 2010 Moab slideshow.^

Wendy and I ended up without the kids for Spring Break, so we decided to run out to Moab and kick around a bit. A 40 car pileup closed Vail Pass in both directions, so we detoured through Leadville, but we made it out there and hiked into Canyonlands National Park and checked out Newspaper Rock and Corona Arch saw the "Needles" for the first time.

She used to live in Aspen back before everything went crazy and her iPod is full of tunes from the 70's that I've not heard in forever and a day. I never listen to the radio and most of those old songs I'd pretty much forgotten about and it was fun rolling along and reminiscing. We had a lot of fun.

Here's a brief slideshow of some of the thousands of photos I shot on the trip to Moab. Note that many of these images are from other towns along the way, including, but not limited to Palisades, Rifle, Grand Junction, Aspen, Glenwood Springs, and Vail.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is "Spooky" by The Atlanta Rhythym Section. Lyrics in the extended entry.

Postcards From Nowhere: Winston-Salem

These photos were taken while we were in the "Twin Cities" of Winston-Salem, (aka "Camel City") for Uncle Bobby's funeral (Jan 28, 1010). Very difficult to come to terms with with the loss when someone so special disappears so suddenly. There aren't any photos of Uncle Bobby in this slideshow. Mostly it's composed of family photos, many of which I saw for the first time. I view this grand reunion, the reunification of individuals and of families, as one of Uncle Bobby's parting gifts.

The images were all captured on one of the following:

The images are compiled into a 5 Meg (3:45) Adobe Flash slideshow(2010_NC.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (2010_NC.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

Postcards from Nowhere: North Carolina

Jennifer and I have recently returned from her great-grandmother's 90th birthday party. We both had a great time. We ran into a lot of people I've not seen in 20 years. I didn't even recognize Scott Sutton when I saw him at first. Not because he's changed that much, just because I'm an idiot I think.

It was good to catch up with everyone. Jennifer was floored by the experience. She told me she thought that she had already met all of her relatives. So, this trip was an eye-opener for her. Hopefully we won't wait another 20 years before our return. No excuse in that, really.

These photos were taken in November of 2009 in the towns of Winston-Salem, Clemmons, Greensboro, and Raleigh North Carolina. The images were all captured on one of the following:

Note: All of my lenses are broken at this point, and I'm sending them back to Canon in the morning. More frustrating than I can say.

The images are compiled into a 20 Meg (3:55) Adobe Flash slideshow(ambulance.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (ambulance.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is Mr. Ambulance Driver by The Flaming Lips. I chose this song because it was in the movie Wedding Crashers and I thought it sounded pretty cool.

Postcards from Nowhere: Baja California

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xy_Ze0Yz3A

I shot my 50,000 image for 2009 this week during my 2,000 mile adventure through Baja California, Mexico on a dirt bike. I figured I'd sit down and cobble together a brief slideshow of the images from the trip. Most, if not all, of these are shots I posted during my travels over the last 2 weeks. However, I did go in and straighten the horizons on a few and try to improve the contrast where possible.

These photos were taken in October of 2009 in San Diego, Baja California Norte (Rosarito, Ensenada, San Quintin, El Rosario) and Baja California Sur (Guerrero Negro, San Ignacio, Santa Rosalia, Loreto, Mulege, Ciudad Insurgentes, Ciudad Constiticion, La Paz, Los Barriles, San Jose del Cabo (Los Cabos), Cabo San Lucas, and Todos Santos).

These images were all captured on one of the following:

Note: I managed to break the EF-S 17-85 mm lens (again). I also managed to lose my ET-83C hood for the long lens.

The images are compiled into a 25 Meg (4:19) Adobe Flash slideshow(baja.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (baja.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is Please Don't Go by Barcelona. I chose this song because I stumbled across it not too long ago while I was surfing the intertubes and I thought it sounded pretty cool.

June/July 2009

I just shot my 30,000th image for the year, so I thought I'd cobble some of my recent photos into a slideshow. I shot these images in June /July of 2009 in Austin, Aspen, Pensacola, San Diego, and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

These images were all captured on one of the following:

The images are compiled into an 17 Meg (4:23) Adobe Flash slideshow(hello.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (hello.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is Hello It's Me by Todd Rundgren. I chose this song because when I was in college, I saw that someone owned one of his CD's and I've never heard a singe song by Todd Rundgren that I liked in the least. So, I was always perplexed by why he would have bought that CD. Then I heard this song in the background of a movie recently (The Virgin Suicides, I think?) and I googled it and finally found one song that Todd Rundgren sings that I actually like, and this made me feel a lot better. Like a salve for 20 years of angst.

May 2009

Yesterday, I shot my 20,000th image for the year. I've been shooting roughly twice the rate I normally do, probably because I've been traveling so much, but also because I've been getting out a lot now that the weather is nice.

My new EOS-50D is scheduled to arrive in two days, so I thought I'd sit down and collect some of my recent photos and cobble them into a little slideshow. When I get my 50D, I'll shoot my 40D as a backup frame, or possibly for landscape photography. But I'll mount my long lens on the 50D and shoot most of my images on that frame, assuming that the sensor isn't too noisy and I can get clean images out of it.

I shot these photos in May (and the first week of June) in San Diego, Austin, and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

These images were all captured with a Canon EOS 40D with a Canon BG-E2 battery grip. The short lens is an image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM). The long lens is a Canon L-series ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with an ET-83C hood.

The images are compiled into an 15 Meg (3:34) Adobe Flash slideshow(2009_May.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (2009_May.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is Alone Again by Gilbert O'Sullivan. I chose this because I fell asleep with the tv on and when I work up, they were running a infomercial called "Ballads That Made You Want To Kill Yourself in the 70's" and they were playing this song, which I'd totally forgotten about. My dad used to play this on his turntable when I was a kid and it got me feeling all sentimental and crap.

April in San Diego

Here are some shots from San Diego in April. Basically, I flew out of a 3 day blizzard in Colorado and touched down in San Diego in the springtime. Indescribable, really. San Diego is a beautiful place.

Postcards From Moab

^^Click on the photo above to play the 2009 Moab slideshow.^^

updated.

Wendy and I were trying to figure out a place to take the girls for Spring Break. We were thinking either the Great Sand Dunes National Park or possibly Moab. Moab had a better weather forecast so we ended up going there. I'm not clear how I've lived in Colorado for 15 years and never made it out there before, but Moab is a cool place. As in extremely cool. Think of the background of every Wile E. Coyote/Road Runner show you've ever seen.

Of course, I couldn't imagine going to Moab without the ATV's, so we trailered out two Honda ATV's. Now...for the record...I've ridden ATV's on the dunes at Pismo Beach in California and St. Anthony Sand Dunes in Idaho and I promise you I didn't have any more fun than these girls did at White Wash Sand Dunes in Utah. The place was deserted so they could just ride until they were sick. Jennifer was actually singing as she drove around the dunes. She was singing "All around the vinegar jug the monkey chased the weasel..." Both girls agreed that driving the ATV's in the White Wash Sand Dunes was the highlight of the trip.

I shot most of these images in or around Moab, Utah from the seat of a Honda Rancher or a Chevy Tahoe with Wendy holding the wheel as we towed an 18 foot dual axle trailer. The photos were mainly shot in Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Gemini Bridges, and White Wash Sand Dunes, although some of the photos were taken in other locations in western Colorado and eastern Utah.

The images are compiled into an 31 Meg (5:05) Adobe Flash slideshow(moab.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above.

These images were all captured with a Canon EOS 40D with a Canon BG-E2 battery grip. The short lens is an image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM). Photos From March

Somehow, I've managed to shoot over 4,000 pictures in March. Not sure what to blame for this. Maybe it's because it's been unseasonably warm or because her cousins were here or possibly it's because I tend to squeeze off a lot of shots at Jennifer's soccer games. Be that as it may...

South Turkey Creek House Fire

Here are some shots from Friday's South Turkey Creek Fire. A house up on Stone Gate Drive burned down, but the Inter-Canyon firemen did a great job of keeping the fire contained in the tinder-dry forest. Fortunately, there was no wind this time. Jennifer and I saw the house fully engulfed as I drove her into school Friday morning at about 8:45 a.m.

Paint Louis

I was driving around the St. Louis riverfront in October of last year and I stumbled onto this crazy long graffiti wall. Apparently, back in 2000, the mayor sponsored some time of graffiti party where people came from all over the country to try to create the largest graffiti mural in the world or something crazy like that. It was originally titled the "Art of the Flood Wall" project, but later came to be known as "Paint Louis". I drove the length of the wall shooting photos, and measured it to be approximately 2.25 miles long.

For whatever reason, I never got around to posting these shots, but I liked them so much I use one of them as my desktop on my laptop. Wendy asked me about it today and only then did I realize that I'd never shared the photos of these stunning murals painted on the flood wall by the Mississippi River.

These images were captured with a Canon EOS 40D with an image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM).

I've posted some of the shots as a 7 Meg (3:36) Adobe Flash slideshow(paint_louis.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above.

Shadow Mountain Fire

Here are my shots from the Shadow Mountain Fire. A house on Blue Sky Trail burned down, but the firemen did a great job of keeping the fire contained in the tinder-dry forest with 40 knot winds. They even kicked down a door and rescued the two golden retrievers from the house.

Update: While I was there, the woman showed up that owned the house. She was reportedly returning from a trip to Peru and arriving just as I was. She was, understandably, hysterical. True, no one died and even the dogs were saved, but once you know that, your house is still gone, and with it, a lot of memories as well.

These images are compiled into an 8 Meg (4:46) Adobe Flash slideshow(fire.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above.

Mad World

I was surfing around youtube the other day and came across a song that struck me. It turns out that the track is Gary Jules' remake of the Tears For Fears song "Mad World". Susan informs me that the lead singer of Tears For Fears prefers the Gary Jules remake over their original version.

Once I had the song, I figured I'd cobble together some shots of Jennifer. The slides show Jennifer in the Geography Bee finals, Jen playing around with Allie, kids spilling out of school at the end of the day, and the second rehearsal for "The Emperor's New Clothes".

These images are compiled into an 11 Meg (2:56) Adobe Flash slideshow(faces.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.).

The long lens is a Canon L-series ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with an ET-83C hood. The flash is a Canon Speedlite 580EX with a Gary Fong Light-Sphere II diffuser. For the blur-motion shots, I used a Bogen - Manfrotto tripod with a Bogen - Manfrotto 3265 Grip Action Ball Head with Quick Release and a Canon RS-80N3 remote shutter release.

If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (faces.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

The Emperor's New Clothes

Jennifer and I are reading "Freddy The Pilot", a favorite of mine from middle school. After I put her to bed, I watched You, Me, and Dupree which my sister forced me to watch when it came out a few years ago. I love the movie, and of course I'm a huge Owen Wilson fan. And I'm always Jonesing for new tracks and I heard this song on the movie which I loved, but of course, it isn't on the soundtrack, which just drives me nuts. So, I backed it up with my DishPlayer and searched for the lyrics on the web.

I was surprised to discover it was a Coldplay song, as I figured that I would have heard it before. The trick is that the song is named "Fix You" and, I did know the song, but I didn't recognize it because they cut into the song about midway through, which makes it worlds better, IMHO.

So, I did the same thing. I imported the .mp3 file into Audacity and trimmed off the first 2:40 of the song, which they should have done if they had any sense. But I digress.

Once I had the song, I figured I'd cobble together some shots of Jennifer rehearsing for her school's adaptation of "The Emperor's New Clothes".

These images are compiled into a 12 Meg (2:43) Adobe Flash slideshow(fixyou.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above.

These images were all captured with a Canon EOS 40D with a Canon BG-E2 battery grip. The lens is an image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM). The flash is a Canon Speedlite 580EX with a Gary Fong Light-Sphere II diffuser.

If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (fixyou.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is a modified (shortened) version of Fix You by Coldplay.

Happy Birthday, Tess!

One of Jennifer's girl friends had a birthday party tonight. They met at a cool little art studio down the hill called Piggy Toes. I lingered and snapped a few shots, some of which I've posted some as a 6 Meg (3:52) Adobe Flash slideshow(adagio.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.).

If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (adagio.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is Adagio For Strings. I think that I first heard it in the movie Platoon, and then later in Amelie. It was composed by Samuel Barber in 1936.

"In January 1938 Barber sent the piece to Arturo Toscanini. The conductor returned the score without comment, and Barber was annoyed and avoided the conductor. Subsequently Toscanini sent word through a friend that he was planning to perform the piece and had returned it simply because he had already memorized it. It was reported that Toscanini did not look at the music again until the day before the premiere. The work was given its first performance in a radio broadcast by Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra on November 5, 1938 in New York."

Christmas Vacation

For some reason, I decided to drive half-way across the continent and back for our Christmas vacation. I drove approximately 3,000 miles through CO/NM/TX/LA/MS over the last week or so. Probably not the brightest thing I ever did, but I actually didn't mind it so much as I can't remember the last time I've actually driven anywhere. All of the photos I shot on the road were taken while driving, as I didn't feel like stopping and setting up a tripod or anything like that. So if the photos don't look sharp, that's probably the reason - they were shot through the windshield while I was barreling down the road at 80 mph.

In any event, I've posted some shots as a 37 Meg (6:27) Adobe Flash slideshow(conmtxlams.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.).

The long lens is a Canon L-series ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with an ET-83C hood. The flash is a Canon Speedlite 580EX mounted on a Stroboframe Pro-T bracket mounted with a custom-fabricated anti-twist bracket and a Gary Fong Light-Sphere II diffuser.

If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (conmtxlams.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro, which I highly recommend.

The soundtrack is How It Ends by DeVotchka.

School Christmas Party

I've posted some shots from the Jen's school Christmas partyas a 9 Meg (2:12) Adobe Flash slideshow(xmas.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.).

The long lens is a Canon L-series ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with an ET-83C hood. I did not use a flash for these photos, as it would have confused the little snowflakes.

If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (xmas.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro, which I highly recommend.

Jennifer's Recital

Jennifer's school put on a musical performance tonight, which was surprisingly pretty tolerable. They have a new music director, and she seems to have some talent. Plus, the kids are getting older, so I suppose that over time, they improve somewhat. Some of the girls that sang solos have truly remarkable voices. But you'll have to take my word for it because I don't shoot video.

I've posted some shots from the recital as a 15 Meg (2:49) Adobe Flash slideshow(recital.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.).

The long lens is a Canon L-series ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with an ET-83C hood. I did not use a flash for these photos, as it would have detracted from the performance.

If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (recital.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro, which I highly recommend.

Sacrebleu!

Yeah, so Jen and I come rolling up to the house this evening. I'm fixing to unload my XR from the trailer and I glance out back to see what's cooking and there's a whole herd of cows grazing out there. They're in tight formation, fairly close to the house, eating everything that isn't nailed down. They're eating grass, choke cherries, scrub oaks, and mountain lilacs. Everything but the pine needles. Bulking up for the winter.

So I grab my camera out of the truck cause I'm thinking, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." As in, there's bound to be a bull pushing all these cows through. And, of course, not only is there a bull, but there's a massive one. Now, it's true that he's technically only a 6x, but this is one large bull. Notice the girth of his neck. The spread of his rack. The muscles in his neck and shoulders.

He's pushing about 20 mature cows, and several immature ones. To get better shots, I descend from the redwood deck, taking my life in my hands in the process. This elk is 500 pounds of raging testosterone in rut. He actually gets upset enough about my presence to start an aggressive, threatening display. He lowers his rack into the choke cherries and just starts thrashing them. Shredding them into pulpy ribbons.

Then he lowers his neck and tilts his head way back. It's really wild to see a display like this. I start shooting him (w/ camera) in my back yard (that's my picnic table in the photo above), and follow him across the property of two of my neighbors.

These images were all captured tonight with a Canon EOS 40D and a Canon L-Series image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with an ET-83C hood.

I've posted some of the shots as a 7 Meg (2:45) Adobe Flash slideshow(2008_elk.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above.

DNC 2008 Slideshow

Finally got around to posting a slideshow of some of my shots from the DNC that unfolded over the last week in Denver. Robert and I spent several days shooting the event, and it was truly a blast. Insanely fun.

I shot all of these photos, with the exception of the photos I'm in (Robert took those) and the one photo of Obama that's been vandalized to make him look like Hitler(Robert took that one as well - wish I'd found it, but I never saw it).

These images were captured with a Canon EOS 40D and two different lenses. One lens is an image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM). The larger lens is a Canon L-Series image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with a 77mm circular polarizing filter and an ET-83C hood.

I've posted some of the shots as a 10 Meg (4:30) Adobe Flash slideshow(dncc_08.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro, which I highly recommend.

The soundtrack is a modified version of Honest Mistake by The Bravery. The modification is that I imported the song into Audacity and repeated one of the refrains because I wanted to stretch the song a bit. Original lyrics in extended entry.

BBQ at the Flying J Ranch

Jen and I went with Meghan, Jeanelle, and Bob to a little BBQ at the Flying J Ranch outside of Conifer today. Was nice to get out and the ranch is beautiful, of course. Kids had a water-balloon fight and went on a hike before the rain set in.

These images were captured with a Canon EOS 40D a Canon L-Series image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) and an ET-83C hood.

Chinns Lake

After shooting the lunatics at the Democratic Convention all week, I needed a break. So I talked Jen into going camping and yesterday we hit a way cool camping spot on Chinns Lake, just this side of the Continental Divide. The location not too far from Alice/St. Mary's Glacier. It's a place I found about five years ago. She's actually camped up there before, but she didn't remember it. It's a pretty serious four-wheel drive trail going up there. I wouldn't recommend taking a mini-van up there or anything. We had it locked into four-wheel low for a few miles to get up there.

Vacation Photos

Laughing Gull(second winter)

We just returned from a vacation to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. I shot approximately 2,500 images over 8 days in July of '08 with a Canon EOS 40D and two different lenses.

I've posted some of the shots as a 31 Meg (5:25) Adobe Flash slideshow(vacation.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (vacation.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, etc.

The Twelve Days of Summer

12 Days of Summer

Summer is passing by so fast I can't stand it. I hate to think about returning to the real world. Jen and I have been playing pretty hard. Trying to get out and enjoy the long summer days, and I've been shooting a lot. (This week, I shot my 10,000th image with my new EOS 40D. God, I love this camera!)

To help postpone the inevitable, and stretch the memory of summer, I culled the 10,000 shots down to what I hope is a tolerable few. The slideshow emma.swf (14 meg, 3:32) should play in any browser.

The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The audio is "For Emma" by Bon Iver off of the album For Emma, Forever Ago. (Kudos to Gretchen for turning me on to the song.)

Note: I was working in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in the summer/fall of 2010. For some reason, I always think that this song was recorded one winter in a cabin up in Door County (the Thumb). In fact, it was recorded in Dunn County in 2006.

Everyday

Yesterday, I took Jennifer and to an air-show. Then Jennifer and I met the neighbors down at Coors Field for a baseball game. They were shooting people at the game and showing them up on the giant screen. They happened to zoom in on Me and Rose with the two girls while Mark and Eric were off wandering around somewhere, so Rose and I had to play the happy couple with Jen and Allie.

Here's a slideshow of some shots that I took on Saturday. Music is "Everyday" by Carly Comando.

Watkins Motocross

Astronaut Hunt

Yesterday, I went out to the Watkins Motocross track in Aurora. Since I'm basically broke, I rode my XR out there, instead of pulling it on a trailer behind the Tahoe, like most rational (employed) people would. Found Brian out there with a shiny new Chevy and his Honda CRF450. Pretty soon, Hunt showed up with another CRF, a Honda 400EX four wheeler, and little brother Ace in tow.

All three of these guys are crazy as loons, of course. Brian has broken more bones than Evil Knievel; I was behind him up around Vail Pass when he totaled one of his snowmobiles "high-marking" in the back bowls. (You can read more about him in the book Killing Strangers). Hunt drove a snowmobile clear across Canada. As in, from one side to the other - over 4,000 km (2,600 miles). Ace rides a Hurricane back East and swims competitively 9 months out of the year. I'm reasonably sure he could out-swim a dolphin.

I went around the track once, but spent most of my time shooting them, as they're fun to watch, soaring through the air like it's no big deal. I'm not so good at ramping, as my skirt tends to get caught in the chain and I'm always afraid I'll break a nail. But it was cool to watch them.

I went out and stood on the track with a Canon EOS 40D and shot them ramping above me, mostly using my shorter, image stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens (EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM) with no filter to take maximum advantage of the light. Now, keep in mind that I'm shooting a motorcycle that's coming at me at probably 30 mph, and ramping past me, so I have approximately 1 second to try to shoot a series of 7 frames. And as the bike approaches, you have to zoom out and pan with the bike. Sometimes it works, sometimes, not so much. I got plenty of shots where I cut off the rider's head. It's easy to screw it up, trust me.

I've posted some of the shots as a 12 Meg (7:17) Adobe Flash slideshow(watkins.swf) you should be able to view with any browser. Alternately, you can view the slideshow as a Windows executable(watkins.exe) which allows the additional functionality of skipping forward, backward, and pausing the slideshow. I run AVG for my anti-virus software, and scan my entire network every night. If you're nervous about running watkins.exe, then you can run the watkins.swf version.

If you want a print or copy of a particular image, try viewing watkins_filename.exe(you can pause this one) or watkins_filename.swf(can't pause this one), as these versions of the slideshow have the image filenames watermarked into each picture. This way, you can specify which images you're interested in.

The soundtrack is Leave by R.E.M. off of the New Adventures in Hi-Fi album. Lyrics in extended entry.

Photos From Peru

This slideshow is composed of 212 original images out of more than 6,500 photos I shot in Peru in the first half of November of 2007. These images where captured in Lima, Paracas, Nazca, Chilhuanca, Cusco, Urubamba, Machu Pichu, Aguas Caliente, Pilcopata, Atalaya, and Manu.

These images were captured with either my new Canon EOS 40D, or my old Canon EOS 20D. 10 days into my vacation to Peru, I dropped my brand-new-two-week-old Canon EOS 40D camera and Canon EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens into a natural volcanic hot water spring by the river while bathing. Doh!

For this trip, I had my own Suzuki 4x4, and my a private driver (thanks, Chino!). In the jungle, 16 meter boat, my own private boat captain (Boris), my own cook (Rosana), and my own private jungle guide (Wilbert, aka Tarzan). This is the way to see Peru. :)

This slideshow (17:35) is an 74 Meg self-playing executable named peru.exe created using Imagematics StillMotion PE+. The soundtracks are:

Update: These photos are very rough, and could all use some work. When I find some time, I'll go back and clean up these images so they aren't so awful. Many were shot without filters in the middle of the day. But, hey, what do you want for free?

Manu Nature Reserve

This slideshow is composed of original images I shot in November of 2007 in the Manu Nature Reserve in the Peruvian portion of the Amazonian basin, including the Cloud Forest, the Eyebrow Mountain Range of the Eastern Andes, and the "Alto Madre de los Dios" (High Mother of the Gods) River and surrounding jungle.

Most of these images were taken with my old Canon EOS 20D and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens, after I dropped my brand-new-two-week-old Canon EOS 40D camera and Canon EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens into a natural volcanic hot water spring by the river while bathing. Doh!

For this trip, I had my own 16 meter boat, my own private boat captain (Boris), my own cook (Rosana), and my own private jungle guide (Wilbert, aka Tarzan). This is the way to see the Amazon basin. :)

Update: These photos are very rough, and could all use some work. They were shot with my backup camera, afterall. Also, I have thousands more photographs to dig through from the mountains and the desert, but these will probably be the best of the rain forest images, for what it's worth. I'm going to sleep now, as my plane left Peru this morning at 1:22 a.m. (EST), and I'm exhausted.

Photos From June/July

This slideshow is composed of original images I shot in June and July of 2007 in Colorado and Tennessee. All photos were captured using a Canon EOS 20D and either a Canon EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens or a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens with a circular polarizing filter.

Many of these images are of the Honda XR400R that I just picked up. Brian and Les and I went up over Ptarmigan Pass. (Brian took the photos of me on the XR). The Honda is a really sweet ride, but it runs too rich over 10,000 feet, so we're definitely going to have to rejet the carburetor before I take it back up into the mountains.

Also, there's one picture of Jennifer and me camping out in Summit County. I took that shot late in the evening using a tripod and a timer. I kept the shutter open for a long time and we just held really still for the shot.

Aloha

Jennifer and I reluctantly returned from our vacation to Oahu and Hawaii today. Many thanks to Uncle Brian, Aunt Karen, and James for being such generous hosts in their beach front house in Waimanalo. Always makes it nicer to have such good friends to hang out with in paradise.

Hawaii is really indescribable. If you've never been to Hawaii, you need to go. Life is short. The earth is small. Enjoy your stay here. It will be over before you know it. :)

As for the colors in these images, they may look somewhat surreal or preternatural. Some might even suggest that they have been modified in photoshop. They have not. All I did in photoshop was adjust contrast, or, in some cases, lighten shadows on people's faces. In one image, I removed a powerline. This really is what the water in Hawaii looks like as viewed through a polarizing filter (or polarized sunglasses).

This slideshow is composed of original images I shot on Oahu and Hawaii. (Except the photos with me in them. Brian shot those. Thanks again, Brian.) All photos were captured using a Canon EOS 20D, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens, and a Canon EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens.

Venice, Louisiana

Before the eye of Hurricane Katrina hit the coast of Mississippi, it scoured the Mississippi River between Port Sulphur, Louisiana, and Venice, Louisiana, erasing civilization from that low, tenuous patch of land, sandwiched between the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River.

This slideshow (4:36) is a 24 Meg self-playing executable named lafayette.exe created using Imagematics StillMotion PE. Soundtrack is Great High Mountain by Jack White, off of the Cold Mountain soundtrack.

This slideshow is composed entirely of images I shot in March/April 2006 with the Canon EOS 20D, Canon 17-85mm lens, a 67mm Hoya circular polarizing filter, and a Bogen tripod with a pistol grip. The presentation is mainly composed of outdoor landscape photographic experiments, and shots of my little ankle-biter and her friends.

San Francisco graffiti tour - Part 2

These photos were all shot from September through November of 2004 when I was commuting to South San Francisco. These images were captured with a Konica Minolta DiMage Z1 or a Canon EOS 20D. (You can tell the difference becase the Canon has a wider aspect ratio(3:2), compared to the Z1(4:3).

San Francisco graffiti tour - Part 1

I found a little present in my snail-mail box yesterday - an article from Tina from San Francisco magazine about the graffiti scene out in San Francisco. It got me to pining about all of the cool videos I had created, but then lost when my hard drive crashed a couple of years ago. So, I decided to try to pull some stills together and share some my thousands of images of San Francisco graffiti.

These photos were all shot in a photographic orgy from March 18-23 of 2003. The same week we went to war with Iraq. The same week that a massive blizzard hit the foothills of Colorado. The same week that I cut and ran to SF like a battered housewife fleeing in the night. I got out just a few hours before the hammer fell.

I shot these photos on a 4.1 megapixel Sony DSC-S85 digital camera, which I don't recommend and I sold on eBay shortly after I got it. However, the resolution is much better than the previous photos I had taken of San Francisco, which were just 640x480 stills from my Sony DCR-TRV330 HandyCam. So, these were the best images I'd ever taken in the city, at that point in time. Mostly, I was mostly just re-shooting graffiti I'd discovered between March and August of 2002, when I was commuting to Redwood City.

This 6 minute 24 second slideshow is a 42 Meg self-playing executable named baker_street.exe created using Imagematics StillMotion PE. Soundtrack is Baker Street off of the City to City album by Gerry Rafferty.

Sometimes An Island

Yet another pointless slideshow. This one has some shots of Lake Dillon's Silver Dollar Island, which is sometimes an island. When the water gets low, it's connected to land by a thin isthmus. Even if the lake is full, you can walk across the ice to the island nine months out of the year. But I digress...

These are some images I shot over the last few weeks with the Canon EOS 20D, Canon 17-85mm lens, a circular polarizing filter, and a Bogen tripod with a pistol grip. There's no real meaning to the presentation, so don't read too much into it. I'm experimenting with shooting some winter landscape photography, so a lot of the images are in black and white because there's not much color to begin with, and the black/white effect makes them a little more stark, IMHO.

This slideshow is an 29 Meg self-playing executable named bandwitch.exe created using Imagematics StillMotion PE. Soundtrack is Bandwitch by Broken Social Scene, a loose association of freaks up in Canada.

Yet Another Jennifer Slideshow

These are some images I shot over the last few weeks with the Canon EOS 20D, Canon 17-85mm lens, and a circular polarizing filter. You may notice in the slideshow that Jennifer tricked me into buying her a rabbit by writing a note and leaving it in the basement where I would find it.

This slideshow is an 18 Meg self-playing executable named techno.exe created using Imagematics StillMotion PE Plus. I have no clue what the soundtrack is. I ripped it from a CD Carol "CQ" Rizzo had in San Francisco last year, and she had no clue what it was at that time. Some crack addict walked up to her in Seattle and handed her a CD with no label and said "check this out" and promptly dropped off the face of the earth. If you recognize the music, please post in the comments.

Latest Jennifer Slideshow

These are some images I shot at the tail end of 2005, after I got my Canon EOS 20D back from its 2nd warranty repair trip to Irvine, CA. I'm experimenting some with black and white, which is a whole lot different than shooting in color, in that you have to pay much more attention to contrast. So, my black and whites are experimental at this point. Hopefully, they'll improve over time.

New Original Hurricane Katrina Images

I went through the "Hard Hit 9th Ward" in East New Orleans, on the East side of the Industrial Canal. "Hard Hit" doesn't begin to cover it. Hard to believe that I shot these images on Friday, November 25th, three months after Katrina hit. Photos appear as though they could have been shot the day after the levee broke.

Apparently, if they want something to be trashed in New Orleans, they are instructed to spray paint "TFC" on the side of it and set it on the curb. Anyone know what TFC stands for? I have no clue. Please post.

Hurricane Katrina Photographs - New Original Images

My brother is a civil engineer working to repair what remains of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. When I got back from Burning Man, he tried to get me to go down and shoot the coast. I didn't go, so he shoots pictures when he's working out in the field. From Colorado, it's hard for me to grasp what they're dealing with in Biloxi. His images do an excellent job of portraying just how utterly devestating the storm was, and how the coast is slowly digging out from under the detritus of Hurricane Katrina. Keep up the good work, J.R. The whole country appreciates the work y'all are doing to restore the coast!

Update: Today, I learn that there's a "nice smell" on the coast and that "31 days after the storm, meat turns to liquid."

New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina reveals a decimated Gulf Coast, from New Orleans to Pensacola, with the devastation extending inland for hundreds of miles. The city of New Orleans was pounded and flooded by Katrina, then sacked and pillages by deracinated mobs of miscegenated youth.

In 2004, I took time off and Tammy and her family were kind enough to put me up, allowing me to wander through the city taking pictures; trying to capture the essence of the city I'd lived in exactly 20 years before. So, in response to the shocking, visceral images the media crews are peddling - endless scenes of criminals wading down Canal Street carrying armloads of stolen tennis shoes and cameras - I present New Orleans as I remember it.

These photographs were taken in February and May of 2004 in the city of New Orleans, and in various swamps surrounding the city. These images were captured using a Konica Minolta Dimage Z1, in a 4:3 aspect ratio. All images were shot in natural light and have not been retouched or edited in any manner.

As many of you know, I've been working closely with the Hawaii Visitors and Conventions Bureau to produce the 2006 slideshow presentation for their tourism website at GoHawaii.com

I don't really know how all of it got started. Apparently they were impressed with the images I shot last year on Oahu, and, to make a short story long, I've been putting together a video (pro bono, of course) just to give them an idea of what I think the video should look like. Here's the working copy of the video I've sent them, and, although it hasn't been greenlighted yet, I think they like it so far.

California Highway 1: San Francisco to Pismo Beach

Here's a slideshow of what will probably be the last of my California photographs. These photos were all taken between San Francisco and Pismo Beach. Some of the specific places I shot were the 49 Mile Scenic Drive, the Great Highway, Pescedero State Beach, 4 Mile Beach(Santa Cruz), Monterey Bay, the Carmel Valley, Big Sur, the Pacific Valley, San Luis Obispo(Slow-town), Lompoc, and Pismo Beach. (The pictures of the Sand Dunes are Pismo Beach, which was, of course, the ultimate destination of Bugs Bunny when he missed that left turn at Albuquerque). The Blue Prelude on the beach is my car and that's me on the red ATV doing donuts in the dunes.

Unfortunately, Canon is in the process of repairing my EOS 20D in Irvine, so I was forced to shoot these photos with my backup camera, the Canon Pro-1. Be forewarned - this is a miserable camera. Stay away from it at all costs. The designer should be severely pummeled with a dull 9-iron. Most of it's shortcomings, however, can be mitigated by shooting stationary objects using a steady tripod. The audio track is "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5. The slideshow is a 9 Meg self-playing executable produced using Imagematics StillMotion PE. Click on the photo above to download the slideshow. The Lost Coast

Here's a slideshow of some stills I shot recently. These images were all taken in January of 2005. Most of them were shot last weekend on my excursion to California's "Lost Coast". The first frames are of the sunrise in Denver, and some shots from the plane. The rest were shot north of San Francisco, in the counties of Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, and Humboldt.

Unfortunately, my spankin' new Canon EOS 20D died after two brief months. I took picture number IMG_0001 with it on November 20th and picture number IMG_5642 on January 20th. So, it lasted exactly two months. I shipped it out today to have it repaired under warranty. They say they can turn it around in two weeks, so I've got my fingers crossed.

===============================================================
Because the 20D was broken, I shot this trip with a Dimage Z1 camera.
===============================================================
I'm not certain, but I think that this was my first trip up to the Lost Coast. This was a 2 day trip from SF to Eureka and back. I think that I sort of dreamed this little road trip up while I was working in SF for Genentech and then, when I rolled off the project, I took this little trip.

I tried to map out my route from my photos. It looks like my route was something like this:

November '04 San Francisco Bay Area Photos

I'm really having a good time with the new Canon EOS 20D 8.2 Megapixel Digital SLR camera. Last week, I splurged and bought a Bogen tripod with a pistol grip and the remote control shutter release. This new setup is the bomb. My sister suggested I get away from shooting graffiti and homeless people so much, and try to tackle some more diverse subjects. As a result, I shot more photos this time of the San Francisco and the beach. Most of these photos were taken the last week of November '04. The beach photos were shot from Point Reyes National Seashore down to Santa Cruz. There's still a few graffiti pictures, as I tend to shoot them on cloudy days because there are no harsh shadows, and because the landscapes look better with blue skies, IMHO.

This is an 18 Meg self-playing executable slideshow produced using Imagematics StillMotion PE. The audio track is "Cablecar" by "The Fray". Click on the photo above to download the slideshow.
