Walking In

Im walkn in:
City workers huddle over subterranean water meters.
Cold n cloudy with a chance of tourists
Shivering line at Mama's in hats and jackets
Rico on the sidewalk now
"Where were u last night?" he asks
My drinking buddy
"Did u find your keyboard?" he continues.
"No."
"You had it when you left. You put it in your pants."
"I know i know but i cannot find it now."
"How much you had to drink?"
"Monday night i had three beers."
I helped Rico catch a raccoon last week and called animal control
We both ride bikes and we are friends now

A shop owner sweeps the street with battered broom
while crippled pigeons graze the concrete sidewalks
Hopping and hoping
Hoping and hopping
Barabary Coast plaques brightly polished by the soles of the souless
And by soleless souls.

Grids of purple glass cylinders cast in concrete sidewalks.
The surreal murals of north beach

At lunch:

The little people sweep up the cigarettes butts the homeless will not have
I wonder if they dreamed of this as kids
A white tattoed drug addict squirms and curses in the afternoon sun
Cotton mouthed he grinds against the sidewalk
like a worm after a rainstorm
cursing at everyone and no one
But no one even sees him
He's the same as the fox gloves and fuchsias and asparagus ferns
They are there
And they are not there
No one sees them and no one cares

A corner flower stand run by a mean asian lady
i don't talk to her any more
i don't spend time around people who are mean to me
not any more

A girl studies the flowers no man will buy her
She thinks about how her life would be beautiful
if only she could find a man to buy her flowers

A man in a denim jacket and smart cap
that wears his keys on a carabiner clip
would buy her Saffrons or Shampoo Ginger

Any man would do really
He doesn't really have to have a smart cap
It would be nice, really
With the cap.

Any flowers would do really
It doesn't have to be Saffrons or Shampoo Ginger
Anything would be better than this
Maybe tulips
Maybe even a single tulip would work.
They're only a dollar, after all.

But no man comes with a cap and she leaves without her flowers

The clouds push back the sun and the temperature drops
and she shivers on the walk home alone
No man. No hat. No tulips. No carabiner keychain.

A person sleeps on the brick sidewalk hungry and cold
Covered by a thin pink blanket shivering in the weak afternoon light
Some padding beneath helps insulate from the bricks
at odd intervals, it shutters and convulses beneath the pink blanket
No sign. No cup. No one stops.

A tourist paints sunscreen on his daughters' faces
He wears no rings
There is no mother
He expertly paints their faces diligently
deliberately
Taking care that no part is missed
His daughters are his canvas

Now he walks off
down the sidewalk
but the older one stops to preen before her reflection
Now twisting the younger girl's hair into a ponytail
Father getting too far away now

The girls bounce down the sidewalk as father slows for them.

Postcards from Nowhere: NXNW

I'm trying to get caught up with the photos I've shot this year. I've shot roughly 30,000 pics so far, so I'm shooting about average. But I've been on the road so much that I've not really made time to clean them up or organize them or do anything meaningful with them, really.

So, in any event, I decided to throw together some of my shots from the bike ride. In this journey, I drove a 2004 Honda XR650L from Morrison, Colorado to San Francisco, California. Now, normally, this would be a thousand mile down-hill run. A cake walk. But I decided to go through RMNP, Tetons, Yellowstone, Craters of the Moon Idaho, Crater Lake, Oregon, etc. So, I took a fairly circuitous route that roughly doubled the length of the trip.

I started the journey on the evening of Friday June 1st. And I rolled into San Francisco on Monday night, June 11th. But I split the trip into two parts. On Tuesday June 5th, I parked the bike in short-term parking at IFRA and flew from Idaho Falls to San Francisco, returning the night of Friday June 8th to resume the journey.

The images were all captured on a Canon EOS 50D frame and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM image-stabilized, ultra-sonic telescopic zoom lens, or on a Canon EOS 50D frame with a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens. A couple of shots were captured with an iPhone 4S.

This slideshow features a song by the Guillemots called Sea Out.

I chose this song because it was on some silly-soap-opera-daytime-housewife-drama called Gossip Girl that the girls were watching in MS. I liked the song a lot. The piano and the singer's voice are fairly good. So I've been listening to it a lot since I got back into the city and...well you get the point.

The images are compiled into an 18 Meg (5:41) Adobe Flash slideshow (NXNW.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (NXNW.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

Walking In - 7/25/12

Tourists set up the shot of the Beatles walking thru the crosswalk
Barking in German
Tourists shoot the mural at Columbus and Broadway
A random corner sticker with ducks and Nofowl.com

"If at first you dont succeed, call an airstike" - Banksy - Columbus and Broadway, 2012

The Broadway tunnel vomits neat streams of cars from the east portal
they rain down upon us hapless victims
We swarm into broad cool cloudy streets
wondering what's it all for anyway
Broken old Chinese men on the wrong side of Columbus

A block over on Montgomery you could hear a pin drop
Rows of naked bolts protrude into the air starving for painted toes in open shoes

The useful underclass struts to work in a timeless pigeon parade
To slave away in obscurity.
Why?
No one can say

Walking In (7/10/12 - 7/18/12)

I walk to work these days, instead of riding the motorcycle. I mean, it's fun riding wheelies through the financial district, terrorizing the pedestrians, and getting tickets and all. But walking provides a more intimate view of San Francisco.

As I walk to work, I've recently been texting Carrie, and she encouraged to write, describing to her what I saw on the way. So, these are a compilation of text message that I sent to her recently, as I was wandering through the city, mainly while on my way to work.

So, if you want to look over my shoulder as I walk into work, feel free. :)

7/18/12

Chinese carpenters rebuild a basement next door
Acetylene and oxygen canisters roll into the basement for the pipe-fitters
Our ice-cream market is closed this morning
Line forms at Mama's as they mow Washington Square and rip the sidewalks open with enormous concrete saws

A homeless man sleeps on a bench by a shopping cart full of trash
Asians do the synchronized Calisthenics in the park as i wander aimlessly through these city streets trying to make sense where none can be found

Postcards from Nowhere: San Francisco

Really had a blast this weekend with Carrie out here. I'm not clear how many people knew she was coming out. I don't even think she knew for sure if she was coming out until she actually landed. Friday was cloudy and cold, but Saturday and Sunday were nice enough for us to run up to Napa and Muir Beach. Ended up being an insanely fun weekend that I could write a whole book about if only I had the time.

This slideshow features a song by Adele called Turning Tables.

I chose this song because I was giving Carrie grief for bringing a bunch of old-school CD's along. Then, we ended up listening to them, of course, as the radio sucked so bad. One of her CD's was an Adele compilation, which had this track on it.

We were just sort of driving along the Pacific Coast Highway and then, suddenly I realized that the song had turned into a duet. Adele had accompaniment. There just aren't words for how beautiful Carrie's voice is. You just can't know.

The images are compiled into a 8 Meg (4:01) Adobe Flash slideshow (carrie.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (carrie.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

Truly Insane San Francisco Drift Video

I actually saw them filming this. I was on my way into work in probably May or June and saw them shooting up in the North Beach/Telegraph hill area of the city. They were shooting at the end of Montgomery Street. I was like..."wonder what these guys are shooting..."
