Interesting history note about another group of eastern European pilots:
When the Czechoslovakian pilots who flew with the Royal Air Force returned home after World War II, the new Communist government imprisoned them because they were infected with the ideals of democracy.
"By the year 1951 all the Czechoslovak RAF airmen were released from the labor camps. But they remained outcasts for most of their lives. It was only in 1991 that the survivors were rehabilitated and recognized for their wartime service."
This was dramatized in the 2001 film "Dark Blue World" (Tmavomodrý svet).
